FANTASY FOOTBALL METRICS - WR

By R.C. Fischer

Mike Williams Seattle WR, potential 2010 Fantasy superstar (09-19-10)

I have been working on this pickup all week with all of my clients and my own teams, either via trade or pickup. I mentioned him as a add/drop to consider in our Monday posting of players to watch/consider. I would like to take this further after watching the tape and researching further.

There is a WR that is still available in many leagues untaken (only 12% owned in Yahoo), that should be grabbed on your team and possibly start as a flex today, or at minimum sit on the roster to see what develops.

That WR is Mike Williams of Seattle (NOT Tampa Bay M.Williams), and I think you should pick him up ASAP. Here are 3 evidences of why:

1) If you knew nothing about Mike Williams, but his Week 1 stat line you would likely fall asleep

Williams had 4 catches for 64 yards, 6.4 Fantasy points (traditional scoring), "big deal" right?. It's what almost happened that would have sent 100% of Fantasy Football GM's trampling each other to pick him up this past week.

Williams first catch was a 15 yard throw, that Williams ran 20 more yards to the goal line and was hit as he reached/stretched into the end zone and was ruled about a yard short of a TD. Upon further review that could have been a TD. Instead just a great catch and run for 35 yards.

Later in the game on 1st and Goal from the 3 yard line he ran a slant for the goal line and the ball ticked off his hands on decent coverage. Had he caught that ball he would have barreled into the end zone for a possible 2nd TD.

If Williams line from last week was 5 catches for 67 yards and 2 TD's, how many people would have been interested? It was a hair away from happening.

2) Williams is the Seahawks # 1 WR

How many true # 1 WR's are sitting on waivers that are teamed with a proven/good QB like Matt Hasselbeck? While everyone is clamoring over getting Nate Washington (TEN) because he caught a TD. Everyone is walking right past Mike Williams because he didn't. The window on that is closing fast.

Williams is a 6'5, 230 pound physical specimen that is a prototypical big target, end-zone type WR. There is no competition for that role on the Seahawks. After Williams, the WR's are pretty mediocre. TJ Houshmandzadeh was cut to hand it all over to Williams.

3) Mike Williams has "star" Metrics

Coming out of college, Williams was a high 1st Round Draft pick for the Detroit Lions who gained a bunch of weight and was labeled a "bust"...and rightly so.

More of the backdrop on Williams

  • As a Freshman and Sophomore Williams was simply amazing with 81 catches, 1,265 yards and 14 TD's as a Freshman, followed by 95 catches for 1,314 and 16 TD's as a sophomore.
  • Williams sat out his Junior year as he got caught up the lawsuit for players to be able to declare for the NFL Draft when they wanted...much like Maurice Claurett. He had to sit out, as they never were granted that permission.
  • He went to the 2005 NFL Combine and ran a 4.56 40-yard dash, which is decent for a big NFL WR (not great), plus had good agility scores.
  • He is not "dumb", as a posted a 20 on his Wonderlic scores, which is like a "C". I was worried that as he turned into a bust and tried to leave college early he might have had real low Wonderlic scores, but he didn't.
  • He goes to Detroit as a 1st Round pick, he has a few good games, but is hampered by injury and issues. Is cut by Detroit, Oakland and Tennessee and is out of football after 2007-08.

You know the rest of the story. He asks former college coach Pete Carroll for a chance to tryout for Seattle after all these years. He cuts weight, and turns every head in camp, and is now their main WR.

Williams has led a very long NFL life, but is still only 26 years old. His physical and college performance metrics lineup with Brandon Marshall. I think that is a perfect comparison. Williams potentially is the Brandon Marshall of Seattle and most Fantasy GM's have walked right past him.

Williams could flake out again. Williams had a bad drop in the game, could have been nerves or could be something he will fight. I'm not suggesting you grab him and throw him immediately in as a starter. However, I do suggest making room on your roster to see what happens as Williams may be the 2009 Sidney Rice Fantasy Football story of 2010.

That ship is going sail fast, many of you could pick him up in the next 5 minutes in your league....
