I am not saying this to be cute. All Browns must
go.
The Cleveland Browns are getting ready to go
(0-9), or close to it, after an (0-2) start. I
am not saying this to be cute. The Browns had
(theoretically) two of the easiest teams in the
NFL to start the season with (TB and KC) and had
a chance to beat both of them, but didn't. Now
the Grim Reaper is going to come calling in the
form of an NFL schedule.
I was under the belief that the way the
Browns Defense was improving late in 2009 and
with another year in the Rob Ryan system as
D-Coordinator, that the Browns Defense would be
decent-to-good. I was also under the belief that
Coach Eric Mangini would continue to develop
Jerome Harrison as a front-line RB, mixed with
talented rookie Montario Hardesty, to set up a
ball-control and solid Defense formula to have a
decent season. I also felt they would have an
entire offseason to find ways to get their
deadliest weapon Josh Cribbs the ball 10+ times
a game running, receiving, passing.
I drafted Josh Cribbs in a just a couple
leagues as a backup (dumped quickly after Week
1). In some leagues, I took the Browns Defense
as a backup D to use for just Week 1 and 2,
before planning to drop them after that. When
Montario Hardesty went down, I thought for sure
they would have to put everything on the back of
Jerome Harrison. The projections have fallen
short, especially with Harrison.
Cribbs was solid Week 2, but still not
getting the ball close to enough for his talent.
The Browns-D has been OK with 6.5 FF PPG so far
in 2010, but I was hoping for a couple 10+ games
(hoping a Cribbs return TD might sneak in there
too). My highest hopes were for Harrison
(without Hardesty). Harrison only touched
(rush+rec) the ball 10 times total in a Week 1
loss, and he got 19 touches in a Week 2
loss...but, little production to show for it.
Now all Browns must go.
There is not a Browns player you should have
from Cribbs, to Harrison, to any of the WR's,
right down to the Kicker or Defense...or Colt
McCoy when he starts playing in a few weeks.
Most Fantasy Football GM's (smartly) don't have
any Browns on their team so this is no issue --
more of a warning to you not to pickup any. The
schedule is coming to wipe all of them out.
Any of us that drafted Harrison, or if you
added Peyton Hillis, you must dump them ASAP for
whatever you can get up to out right release for
a gamble/long shot RB. When you see this
upcoming schedule you will know why, and keep in
mind the Browns could not move the ball against
TB and KC....
- Week 3 @ BAL = Want to start Hillis or
Harrison here?
- Week 4 vs. CIN = no one is going to fear
the Browns passing game, teams with good
DB's like CINN can put 7-8 in the box and
dare Seneca Wallace or Jake Delhomme to
cough up a Pick-6.
- Week 5 vs. ATL = Believe it or not,
Atlanta is a top-rated Run-D. One of the
toughest to run against for Fantasy 2009.
- Week 6 @ PITT = ask Chris Johnson...
- Week 7 @ NO = Saints have been OK to run
if you want to hold onto Hillis and Harrison
for 4 Weeks to take a shot on it...
- Week 8 BYE
- Week 9 vs. NE = another very tough team
to run on.
- Week 10 vs. NYJ = Pittsburgh like for
Run-D.
- Week 11 @ JAC = this is a good match
up...only 8 weeks from now.
- Week 12 vs. CAR = another very tough
Run-D
- Week 13 @ MIA = an emerging tough D
- Week 14 vs. BUF = a good match-up
- Week 15 @ CIN = still not good 2nd time
around.
- Week 16 vs. BAL = Ed Reed back too.
- Week 17 vs. PIT = if Week 17 matters in
your league, a Browns RB won't.
The next 8 Weeks the Browns RB are virtually
useless. I'm sure somewhere in there one might
get a lucky run, but can you really count on
them vs. these next 8 opponents when they
couldn't budge TB and KC?
Harrison might have a little value to someone
right now, Hillis might even have a little more.
Either way you need to get out now while they
have any value, because that value is going to
crash quickly. If you can't find a trade
partner, cut them and sink someone else on a
roster spot.
I've marveled as an "arm-chair" coach at the
decisions Eric Mangini has made, from trades to
who he uses when on Offense. Mangini is a lock
to get fired and I can't say that I will be
surprised. Before Mangini burns me any more in
2010, I am cutting ties and dumping all evidence
of Browns on all my clients and my own rosters
before the crash officially hits. I propose to
you to consider the same.
