Fantasy Football Metrics - 2011 Draft
Guide; Unique and Intelligent Stats, Tips, Help,
and Cheat Sheet.
For sure we know that there are two players
who have thrown their hat in the ring for the
2011 NFL Supplemental Draft -- Ohio State's
Terrelle Pryor, and Clemson RB Caleb King. The
other possibilities are just rumors with Notre
Dame WR Michael Floyd, Ohio State RB Daniel
"Boom" Herron, and Ohio State WR DeVier Posey.
Over the past two weeks, I have been looking
at each of these players, prepping for the NFL
Supplemental Draft...whenever it might come upon
us. I have to say there are a couple intriguing
prospects of the bunch, but all come with some
level of baggage. We did not have all the
necessary key data to run our full computer
analysis of them, so we could only use what he
had at this point...and remain neutral on what
we were missing. I wrote about each player in
some detail, but as a recap (with original story
links):
Michael
Floyd, Notre Dame WR
Floyd is the most obviously suited for the
NFL talent right now among this group. I would
theorize (again, we are missing some key data)
that Floyd would have been a late 1st or early
2nd-Round draft pick had he been in the actual
NFL Draft in April. Floyd is a much more
polished WR than Julio Jones, or A.J. Green, or
Jonathan Baldwin...when I look at them all on
tape -- with the added bonus that Floyd was
statistically productive (in our system). Floyd
rated with A.J. Green as a top performer among
the highly drafted 2011 WRs. It is the multiple
incidents with alcohol that gives everyone pause
on Floyd.
My prediction would be that if Floyd returns
to Notre Dame and has another big year, and
stays out of trouble -- he will be the top WR
prospect in the 2012 NFL Draft. Julio Jones has
more physical talent, but Floyd may be the best
overall/total/complete WR prospect among the
2011 group...if he were to join it. However,
"buyer beware" on the alcohol issues.

Caleb
King, Georgia RB
King is intriguing because there are a couple
of physical skills and measurements from high
school that translate very well to the NFL...but
that was years ago when King was one of the top
High School RBs in the country. Unfortunately,
King became a backup RB at Georgia with
fleeting, momentary flashes of brilliance. King
is a long-shot for the NFL, as he may not have
the work ethic needed. On the right NFL team,
maybe he can be groomed...but more likely he
heads for Canada.
I would have King among my top 20-25 RBs in
the 2011 class, a very late gamble pick. If I
could know that NFL team drafted him in the
supplemental, I could see him as maybe a top
15-20 RB prospect in this class.

Terrelle
Pryor, Ohio State QB/WR
As a QB, we have virtually no interest in
him. It is the height of arrogance, and/or the
folly of coaches who think they can take the
immense physical specimen with obvious holes in
his game, and "make" him a thriving NFL
QB...with their "magic touch." When will the bad
NFL teams learn? How many Tom Brady, Drew Brees,
etc type under-whelming bodies need to go on to
become NFL elite QBs, before everyone stops
looking at the physical specimen first for a QB.
There is no way Terrelle Pryor becomes an
effective NFL QB. A team did draft Tavaris
Jackson, so likely Pryor will get picked up as
well.
As a QB, we have no interest...but as a WR,
you have my attention. Pryor is built like an
elite NFL WR...but we have no idea if he
possesses any of the skills to become an NFL WR.
What we all have seen from a distance, can't
lead us to believe he will work hard at the NFL
level and successfully change positions. This is
likely Matt Jones all over again, only I liked
Matt Jones 10x better.
I'd love to take a cheap look at Pryor as a
WR prospect in a Dynasty Rookie Draft...but no
doubt someone will take him early as a
highly-publicized/wishful thinking to be an NFL
QB.

Daniel
"Boom" Herron, Ohio State RB
Herron is an OK prospect, but not one that
jumps off-the-charts. Caleb King has more risk,
but also has more upside. Herron is likely to go
undrafted if he were to declare for the
Supplemental Draft. Herron is probably a 3rd-4th
RB on an NFL depth chart at this point...only
seeing time if the circumstances fell his way. I
see a lot more RBs out there that look more
intriguing than Herron.
In a Dynasty Rookie Draft, there are plenty
of late round RBs to look at that are much more
intriguing than Herron -- most notably undrafted
Mario Fannin and Nic Grigsby.

DeVier
Posey, Ohio State WR
To spare words and time, we'll keep this
short -- Posey was the least interesting of the
five Supplemental Draft prospects we looked at.
Nothing jumped out special. I could see why a
team would take a shot on any of the above
players, but don't see any reason for a team to
pick up Posey. If he does declare, you are
wasting a draft pick in a Dynasty Rookie Draft
with Posey.
